THE GENESIS OF BATHUKAMMA

Scholars and pundits from the Hindu religion claim that the Chola Dynasty once had a king by the name of Dharmangada. South India was largely under the control of this ruler. After several years of rites and prayers, his wife gave birth to a daughter. Princess Lakshmi was her given name.

Throughout her childhood, Baby Lakshmi was subjected to numerous mishaps and unexpected events. The parents went through life and death while raising their lone child. Later, they named their daughter Bathukamma. They later gave their daughter the name Bathukamma. Bathuku signifies life, while Amma is a female affectionate title for a mother in Telugu.

BATHUKAMMA

THE PURPOSE OF THE FESTIVAL

The prominent reason to celebrate this festival is to make impassioned prayers to the Goddess. The young ladies OF Telangana state participate in this distinctive Bathukamma festival with firm belief and faith that they would soon find their beloved husbands in accordance with their dreams and desires. However, married women who attend this occasion with their close family and friends offer prayers to the Goddess for the health and success of their families.

THREE DIFFERENT STORIES

1. THE CHOLAS STORY

According to an interpretation of Bathukamma, the Chola Dynasty included a monarch by the name of Dharmangada and a queen by the name of Satyavati. They lost one hundred of their boys in battle. So they prayed to the goddess Lakshmi and performed rituals for her to be born as their daughter. As soon as the Goddesses heard it, they complied. Many experts and commentators came to see the newborn in the royal palace and gave her the blessing of calling her Bathukamma, or live forever.

  • THE DEVOTED FLOWER STORY

According to a different interpretation, Parvathi or Batakamma is a devoted flower lover. The seasonal flowers of spring are arranged on a square bamboo frame or square hardwood plank with the size of frames that is barely tapering off to directly form a pinnacle on the top.It resembles the form of a “Gopura,” or temple tower. A lump of turmeric is kept on top of the flowers. This tiny flowery mountain is used in the worship of Goddess Batakamma.

  • THE BURNT DOWN STORY:

Telugu writings contain references to the old Bathukamma narrative. Everyone was invited to Daksha’s Yagna, with the exception of his youngest daughter Gauri, who had wed Lord Shiva against his wishes. Gauri attended the Yagna against Shiva’s wishes, and both she and Lord Shiva were offended. She burned herself on fire after being unable to take the insult any longer. Women build an idol of Bathukamma out of turmeric, decorate it with flowers, and sing and dance around it in an attempt to entice her back.
